Job Security
The one of the major reason for choosing public sector is job security. Government jobs have complete job security as when you got the job its permanent till your retirement. There is no clause of removal. On the other hand, in private sector jobs, there is no job security at all. They can easily replace you if they got a better person for that role. A small argument with seniors may also lead to loss of employment. The job in private sector is very risky. You need to regularly upgrade your skills to survive in the organization. So, your job security depends upon your performance. However in government job your job is fixed from the day of joining.
Work Life Balance
There is huge difference in work life balance between the two sectors. Private sector has long working hours and has huge work load. Therefore life in private job is hectic. Due to long working hours private job employees find it difficult to maintain work life balance, which ultimately affects the quality of life.
However, government jobs have fixed working hours. Generally public sector have 7 hours of working hours while private sector tend to have 9 hours of working hours. The work load in government jobs is minimal as compared to private sector jobs. Therefore government employee have better work life balance and live a better quality of life.
Salary and Incentives
This is another major point to be considered while choosing government jobs. Generally the private sector pay more salary than public sector. However, the public sector provides various incentives along with salary. These incentives include medical facilities, tours and trips, transportation, education etc. in private sector you will get promotion and bonus along with salary. But you will have to compete with your colleagues and your promotion will totally depend on your performance.
The overall benefits of government jobs exceeds the benefits of private jobs in long run as the value of other incentives is higher than the salary and bonus of private sector.
Holidays
The list of public holidays is unmatchable with private sector holidays. In government jobs you will get a lot of holidays throughout the year. All the public holidays are off in government jobs. On the other hand in private sector there are only a few number of holidays. Sometimes you have to work on Sundays too. The holidays in multinational companies are not according to Indian festivals and events.
Paid Leave and Flexibility
This is another important factor to be considered. In private sector you are allowed only 15-20 paid leaves per annum, for extra leave they cut the salary. Moreover you will not get any leave if there is huge work in company.
But this is not the case in public sector. In government jobs you will get the leave as and when needed. There is no such limit of number of days. There should be a valid reason for leave. So, you get more flexibility in your job.
Retirement Benefits
Retirement benefits are major backlog for private sector. Private companies do not provide any retirement benefits to employees. Therefore, private employees do not get financial security after retirement. They are left with the money they earned till retirement.
On the other hand public sector provides huge retirement benefits. Pension is one of the major benefit of government jobs. However, pension scheme has been closed recently but still it is applicable for a few no. of jobs. Many other benefits like medical facilities, transportation etc. are continued after retirement till the death of person.
Relocation
Almost all government jobs have appreciable relocation policies. Public sector employees can easily shift from city to another. For example public bank employees get job in bank on another where he wants to move. Many government jobs like banking, teaching etc. provide good relocation policies.
While the private sector doesn’t provide relocation policy at all except few multinational companies. If you want to shift from one city to another then you will have to change your job. This is a major issue in private sector.
Work Stress
The level of stress in private sector is extremely high. There are a lot of deadlines that you have to meet. Moreover, the pressure from seniors is high and you have to follow their instructions. During peak season the work load increases the normal capacity of an employee. This leads to huge level of stress and depression.
On the other hand, in government jobs there are no deadlines to meet. Also there is little pressure from seniors and one can independently do his work. Moreover work load is less. Therefore government employees don’t have any work stress.
Social Status
Our society have huge respect for public sector employees. Government job employees get much more respect than private sector employees. The government jobs like IAS, IPS etc. are most reputed jobs in our country. Due to government job people get chance to make relations with politicians and ministers. This lead to earn social status.
While in private sector employees don’t even get a chance to meet politicians and ministers. Also, society doesn’t have any respect for such jobs unless you are in top multinational company like Google, Amazon etc.
